A Club, a Comedy, and a Commercial

Happy Friday, RISERS! I hope this week has been good to you. Here we are at the second weekend in September already. Look out! Fall is on the way. Well, my family survived the wedding last weekend. It was a precious experience. Luckily, we have a little time before our daughter gets married—or maybe I should say that I’m keeping my fingers crossed! On Monday, I will begin my after-school book club. I am a little nervous that no one will show up. My plan is to keep the club focused on exploring books—in whatever manner the students want to take it. Wish me the best!

Quote of the week: This week, the quote is a slogan used to advertise a popular restaurant, and I think you’ll see immediately why it has been so effective. “You deserve a break today….At McDonald’s, we do it all for you.”

Movie of the week: I want to introduce you to a charming American romantic comedy from 1953, Roman Holiday. The movie stars Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. Audrey Hepburn won an Academy Award for her portrayal of a princess who sneaks out of her responsibilities for a day and takes a tour of Rome. Gregory Peck plays a journalist who learns her secret and tries to get a scoop about her, but he relents at the last minute. It has moments of humor as well as beautiful scenery. I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Joke of the week: What did the musician say after the commercial break? Stay tuned…

Nugget of Wisdom for the week: I know what you’re thinking. Why did I mention TV commercials and McDonald’s? Well, believe it or not, the jingle above conveyed an important message. That message was that you deserved to take a bit of time out of your busy schedule and have a nice, juicy hamburger (or another treat) at McDonald’s. Let someone else take care of cooking dinner for you, for once. It’s okay to spend a little money on yourself, so why not enjoy a getaway from your daily routine without having to worry about going broke? Although they were talking about fast food, the message is still valid in broader way. We sometimes get too busy and forget to take a little time for rest, relaxation, and reward. With school, possibly a job, maybe church, then time with friends and family, it might feel as if there is nothing left to give. Be sure to allow yourself a break when you realize you need one. Show yourself a little grace, and rest assured that you don’t always have to know all of the answers.

Have a great weekend. Remember, you are most awesome, and YOU ROCK!
